Listening 2 :# listen to a site supervisor giving instructions about setting out the site in 1. what is the
supervisor’s role?
The supervisor will be in the middle doing the barrier.

The supervisor’s role is to give us protection
from oncoming traffic

3. Listen again. How long are D and T in the
illustration in 1?

• Both D and T are 25 metres long.

Vocabulary 4. Work in pairs. Discuss the meaning
of these phrases.
1. oncoming traffic
2. face the traffic
3. volume of trafic
1 vehicles moving towards the work site
2 look towards the traffic
3 amount of traffic

Reading 5. Look at this table. Caculate the speed limit of the road in 1. in the
supervisor correct he says he needs five metres between the cones?
Safety at street works and road works

size and siting distance: detail of sign and cones and safety zone dimensions
Since the ‘road works’ sign is only 50 metres from the vehicle (or 25 metres from the start
of the lead-in taper), the speed limit must be 30 mph. According to the table, he needs at
least four cones for a taper of 26 metres, so a distance of five metres between cones is
fine.

6. Use the illustration in 1 and the tables in 5 to complete this table.
2 D=110–275m;T=50m;S=0.5m; L=1⁄2m
