<b> Warm-up: Name it (5mins)</b>
Arrange some chairs, back to back, in the middle
of the room
Choose phonics cards and place them on the chairs
Play a song (use a song from the previous units)
When the music stops the students pick up a
phonics card and, one at time, tell Teacher the
name of the item pictured on their phonics card

Play the activity as many times as necessary

<b> Revision & Practice</b>
<b>1. Listen. Read along (Track 26) (10mins)</b>
(book closed) Tell the students that it’s story time.
Ask them if they like reading stories and what their
favourite story (or character) is
Prepare phonics cards of these words: ant, bed,
<i>dog, cat, clock, dragon, drum </i>
Ask the students to read out the words
Invite students to guess what they think the story is
about (do not dismiss any ideas)
Ask the students to open their books
Ask them questions about what they can see in the
pictures
<i>e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the dog in picture 1) </i>
<i>Look! What’s this?</i>
<i> Class: (It’s a) dog!</i>
<i> Teacher: (pointing to the bed in picture 1) </i>
<i>Yes! The dog is on the ….</i>
<i> Class: bed! etc</i>
follow the story in their books, pointing to the
pictures of the key words
Play the CD again pausing for the students to
repeat
Ask individual students to read the story aloud
<b>Extension (optional)</b>
Ask the students to read the story again
Then ask them to look at the pictures for a few
minutes and close their books
Say a few sentences (some correct and some
<i>incorrect) and ask the students to say yes or no</i>
<i>e.g. Teacher: The dog is on the bed.</i>
<i>Student 1: Yes!</i>
<i>Teacher: The dragon is on the clock.</i>
<b>2. Which animals are in the story? Colour </b>
<b>(10mins)</b>
Point to the animals and ask students to name them
Ask the students to say which animals appear in
the story
Ask them to colour those animals
<b>Activity 1: Act Out (10mins) </b>
Read the sentences in the story, pause at the key
words
Invite the students to mime them (the dog, the bed,
<i>the ant, the cat, the clock, the dragon, the drum.</i>
Have the students come to the front of the
classroom and act out the story
Encourage them to have fun as they perform

Put up some phonics cards on the board.
Line up students into 2 teams of 6
Call a student from each team to stand 1m from
the board
Read words out loud, one at time (e.g. ant), the
students must run to tap the card of that word
The student who taps the correct card first will
get 1 point for his/her team. The team with the
most points wins the activity

Ask 12 students to come to the front of the

The students must find and get in line with other
students holding cards beginning with the same

the board. Give the students 3 minutes to
remember the words. Erase them.
Divide the class into small teams
Ask them write down the words in 3 minutes
Then put teams’ lists up the board
