<b>III. READING</b>

<b>Exercise 1. Read the text and answer the questions.</b>

<b>Making a TV serial</b>

It usually takes five days to make one episode of a TV serial. In that time, the actors must learn
their words, the director must plan every move of the ators and the crew, and then they must record the
episode on video.

First, the actors read the script to themselves. Then they come together and read the script aloud
with the director. They call this a “table reading” because they all sit round a table.

The hard work begins on the second day. The actors and the director work through the episode
again and again. The director helps the actors to do it better each time.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(3)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=3>

The fourth day is a big day for the crew. While the actors go through the episode again, the crew
work out what they must do in each scene. There are usually about forty people in the crew, so this is
important: everybody must know what to do, where and when.

On the last day, the actors and the crew pratise and prepare together for the last time before the
recording. Then the cameras and microphones start recording. Each part of the episode is recorded more
than once, so the director can choose the best recordings later. The recording usually takes about four
hours. But if there are problems, everyone works all night.

Before the actors go home after the recording, the director gives them the script for the nest
episode.

<b>FAKING IT</b>

<i>Faking It is one of the most popular reality TV shows in Britain – and there’s an American show,</i>
too. It’s a very simple idea – somebody has to learn a new job in four weeks. For example, a punk singer
leanred how to be a classical musician, and a computer games tester became a racing driver. The
programmes are usually very interesting because the people try really hard – so the audience wants them
to be successful. They usually pass the test at the end – but not always.

Sian Evans is a young classical musician. Faking It changed her life. She trained to be a DJ for
one of the shows. At first she didn’t really like modern music and she didn’t know anything about it. She
was also surprised because it was very difficult. But she worked hard and started to like it. She passed the
test – in fact, after four weeks she won a DJ competition – and now she enjoys going to clubs and being a
DJ in her free time.

Why is it a successul and popular show? I think it’s because it has a great message – you can do
anything is you really want to. It’s one of my favourite TV shows – it makes me happy!

<b>Read the statements and answer whether they are true or false. Write T for true and F for false.</b>

1. The show is about music.

2. The contestants learn a new job.

3. A classical musician became a junk singer.

4. The audience want the people in the show to succeed.
5. Sian Evans failed the test.

6. The text is positive.

<b>THE BENEFITS OF TV</b>

TV is now taking on more and more importance in our lives. For many it is now the main source
of entertainment and they use it as a form of relaxation after a hard day at work or school. It is a way of
forgetting about reality for a few hours. Most people like to watch comedy programmes or game shows,
which do not require too much concentration. However, there are also many people who see TV
differently. They use it to find out about the outside world, as a source of information. They switch it on
when it’s time for the news or when there is a documentary on an interesting subject. Some people even
learn history and literature by watching historical dramas or adaptations of novels. A thirteen-year-old girl
who was found to have a very good general knowledge and was thought to read a lot said, “But I learnt it
all from TV.” This is one interesting advantage of TV that many parents overlook.
