INTRODUCTION
In the trend of the integration in the regional and global economy, Vietnam is

facing a great transformation itself in order to adapt to the increasingly
competitive environment of the country. In which, translation is one of the strong
developing sectors in Vietnam, especially in recent times. It has more and more
developed strongly since Vietnam joined the WTO. During that time, a series of
translation companies launched competing strongly on price, quality, service, etc.
Because the translation industry has great significance in terms of language,
culture, social and economic. Particularly, English is considered the most common
language used in the world, it plays an important role in daily life from
communication to the opportunities in education, work, relationships expandsion
for business cooperation. People need English to communicate with more friends
from other countries. Students need to know English to be able to integrate and
learn better when studying abroad. The Vietnamese company should have English
to expand cooperation and investment. And English is one of the effective tools to
help international friends understand the voice of Vietnam in the important
international conference.

As an English- majored student of Vinh university, I have an opportunity to
study and work at the Vinh Long translation Limited Company (Công ty TNHH

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES

What I have done.

Week 1 (from 22rd February 2016 to 28th February 2016)
The first week, everything really is new to me, both human and work, I was

crestfallen and anxiety. However, I am very lucky and happy, everyone in the
company is very friendly and enthusiastic welcome, help and guide me so that I
can continue to fulfill my work.
My work at the first week as follows: discussing with company about intrenship
plans, objectives and process requirements in the intern, researching my works
which I should practice, learning the process of formation and development,
structure, functions, mission and operation goals/objectives of the company,
planning the practice, being introduced about the require of translation from
English into Vietnamese and vice versa, learning experience in the translation
from other collaborators. I have learnt how to use the photocopier, scanner, fax
and how to write the receipts for the customer and send documents be translated to
collaborators by the mail. I have started to get acquainted with the types of
documents and practiced to translate a number of documents from Vietnamese into
English. They are contracts related to sale and purchase wood, lease housing from
Vietnamese into English. And then I have compared the exact answers of
professional translators and find mistakes in my translation to draw lessons.

Week 2 (from 29th February 2016 to 6th March 2016)

My works are continuely scan, print and photocopy documents for customers. I
write the receipts for the customer and send documents be translated to
collaborators by the mail, receive faxes from customers, director and

collaborators. I practice to translate a number of documents: “Economic contract”
and “contract Addemdum”, “school report” and some certificates from Vietnamese
into English, from English into Vietnamese. On Saturday (26/02/2016) I translated
a document about business license. I have checked and compared the exact
answers of professional translators and correct the mistakes in my translation.
Week 3 ( from 7th March 2016 to 13th Marrch 2016)

At this week, I went to the company on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Some
customers came to the company and asked me to photo, scan some documents for
them, I did. Others brought some documents to translate, the director received and
then I wrote the bill for them. On Tuesday, I went to Vinh City notary office with
my guider to seal some documents. This was the first time I went there, I feel
embarrassing. But I was guided by everyone, I did that work and learnt how to
speak in office very well. The most important work I usually do is translating and
in addition, I work with collegue to translate documents for customers. I translated
some certificates, some documents related to construction and learn more new
words, know how to transfer Vietnamese grammar into English grammar.

Week 4 ( from 14th March 2016 to 20th March 2016)
This week I have felt more confident in the notary office because I also became

acquainted and friendly conversation with everyone there. I have never felt so
boring repetitive job every day, every week is my photo, scan, send and receive
documents, translating, etc. Contrastly, I always get to meet and contact with fun
customers, and learn lots of thing from them and moreover, everything from
translation and communication will help a lot for my life as well as my future job.
The documents I translated are related to result of learning, business license, and
some certificates such as identity card, family register and so on.

Week 5 (from 21th March 2016 to 27rd March 2016)
Continuely, I tidy the office and make tea and scan, print and photocopy

documents for customers. When customers give documents to translate, I write the
receipts for them and send documents be need to translate to collaborators by the
mail. And then I go to Vinh City People’s Committee to notarize. However, my

main work is practicing to translate a number of documents from Vietnamese into
English and working with collegue to translate documents for customers.

Week 6 (from 28th March to 3rd April 2016)
This week I also did the works in the Company as weeks before. Besides, I

reinforced the working knowledge and experience of the first, second, third,
fourth, fifth and sixth week and understood more professional knowledge of the
work in these weeks. Besides, I collected information and data for report. I also
continued to write and complete each section of the report, sent to supervisor to
review, edit errors and add missing parts. I reviewed assigned work and drawn
experience in the practice process, experience of handling situations encountered
in practice, working skills and the abilities to apply learned knowledge into
practice.

Week 7 ( from 4th March to 10th April 2016)
I went to the company and completed all assigned works, scan, print and

photocopy documents for customers, writing the receipts for the customer and
send documents be translated to collaborators by the mail, going to Vinh City
People’s Committee to notarize. I practiced to translate a number of documents
from Vietnamese into English, English into Vietnamese. So near 2 months of the
internship has passed, only one leaving week away. I saw how fast the time goes,
everything seems still new here. I do not dare to imagine the day that I leave the
company when relationship with people in the Company is more and more closed,
I also love my job more.

Week 8 (from 11th to 17th April 2016)
In the last days, I handed over job with the company, ended my internship at

the practice facility and used information and data to write and complete the

report. Everyone in the Company and group of practicum student had a farewell
party full of nostalgic and also very funny.

New skills acquired and skills improved.
During two months of practicing the translation skill, I have acquired and

improved some skills:

Learning ways how to manage daily work assigned, from which I am able
to know the ways to arrange my time to complete my works timely and

effectively so that I might implement the targets set successfully.

The internship has helped me improve skills in using computer better. This
will be very helpful to me in learning as well as developing my job in the
near future.

Learning how to use some machines such as scanner, photocopier. An
interesting experience is really new to me, because previously when
scanning or printing I often use external services. Thereby in the internship
period, I did catch the principles of operation of various types of printing
and scanning devices as well as learn about new types of texts and materials
commonly used in company.

Improving my communication skill in social life, having good relationship
with everybody in the Company, friendly with customers. This makes me
more ingenious in behavior and be loved and believed in my morality and
ability.

Learning to work fast and effectively.

Learning the way to find out and collect information. Find out and
collecting information is the ability to know where to get necessary
information to search, locate, and collect it. This may be related to the use
of different resources, whether they are from people or from the documents
in the vast world of technology form.

Improving my translation skill when I get acquainted and practice to
translate many types of documents related to various fields. That help me
translate more fluently, accurately and easier for my future work.

Improving group works skill, I learnt from staffs in the company. I knew
that when you want to do some thing well, you must need a lot of help from
many people. They will discuss and give good ideas.

Management techniques observed.
In the practicum period I learnt about the management skills from my
supervisor in the Vinh Long translation Company.
• Time management:
In these 2 months, most of the time I used to communicate and work with
staff. Having time management skills, I have the ability to organize work
approciately and have the ability to solve problems effectively. We worked in
group and divided the work to each member so that suit with one’s profession
in order to save the time and have effective results. Effective benefits of time

management are making life easier, reducing stress and increasing joy in work,
increasing privacy time for one’s use. That will allow you to control your time
and keep your life in balance.
• Human management:

Knowing how to manage employees will bring very high efficiency of
working. We must see people as the top assets of the company and the most
valuable asset is the staff who are competent and good at morality.
And the most importance is exploring and grasping who are good at what
field to arrange time and work suitably. For examples, each person is
responsible for a task, who are translate English, who are translate Laos, this
person is good at construction documents, other is good at economic
documents, etc.
Last but not least, we must always have trust and respect for staff anytime,
anywhere, enthusiastic interest in them, and we are willing to help them in
troubled times.
• Facility management:
In Vinh Long Company, there are two computers, one printer, one scanner,
one photocopier and many dictionaries. These facilities are used to serve the
translation and printing of documents for customers. All people in the
company has the right to use and the obligation to protect them so that we can
use effectively.
During the 2 month internship in the company, I have learned how to use
some equipments that I have not known how to use before. Besides, I utilized
most effectively when the need for translation of documents and regularly
cleaned and carefully preserved.

Classroom skills employed

University is the place which give us knowledge and awareness but when we

worked in the reality, we had to know apply and use the knowledge into
practice. However, the knowledge only supports any parts, the most important

thing is that we need to try my best to learn and work effectively. While
studying at Vinh University, I have been trained about many subjects such as:
Reading, Writing, Translation, Interpretation, English for Law, for Economics,
etc by my teachers of Foreign Language Department at Vinh University. These
subjects have helped me a lot for my practicum process.
• Reading and writing skills: With reading and writing subjects I have
learnt, I can read fast, grasp the grammatical structure of sentences in
English and Vietnamese. On that basis, I understood clearly documents
need translate and I can translate more exactly and smoothly, learned
how to phraseology.
• Translation skill: I have been learnt many new words in different topics and
the way to translate Vietnamese into English and versa. I think it is the most
important skill in working everyday during the period of the internship,
especially for translator in the future.
• With the subjects of English for Law and Economics, I know more new
words and I can translate more fluently some documents, contracts related
to law, economics, etc. I have given the background knowledge about law
and economics issues in my country and all over the world, it helped me
very much in working in some jobs.
To be equipped with these skills, I have a chance to practice in Vinh Long
translation Company. During my practicum process, I use my knowledge to
provide for my task, I improved my translating skill better day by day. During
working with many people with many different works, I learnt how to work in
a group, and many working skills.

Problems encountered

Because of being an intern student, the initial time at the company, I am rarely
received in works of the company or participate in activities related to my
academic majors. I am not assigned to translate the documents of customers
because I do not ensure the completing accuracy of the translation and incapable
responsible before the law. Moreover, during the internship, I have many
difficulties in accessing and understanding the internal information such as
financial management. Real working environment is actually quite new and
different from my thinking in University so I am very crestfallen and confused in
the first practice days. In the process of internship, I have to face some problems
as follow:
Firstly, the vocabulary is poor and irregular practices,I did not know many
profesional language (constructive profesional language) therefore at the
beginning I mistranslate some words in document. It was difficult for me to
translate idoms or some phrases in economics. So that correct I have tried to read
more profesional documents, find information about constructive profesional
language to improve my knowledge in this field and use dictionary to translate
exactly words for each situation.
Secondly, in communication skill, I still feel shy, not talking much with
customers. Moreover, I did not have many chances to use English with my staff
and customers beacause all of them are native Vietnamese. They also rarely use
English in speaking. Therefore, I could not practise speaking English more in the
company or in life. I just used English to translate the documents and exchange
information with customers by email. I think that if in the future I may get this job,
I will have more chances to use my English in communication when I meet my
foreign customers and our company’s partners.

Thirdly, during studying at University I do not regularly practice computer,
never used directly equipment such as scanner, photocopier before and I did not

get used at work in the company, therefore, my computer skill and using other
equipment is still slow and has many flaws.
Last but not least, it is the pleasure, stress timeframe of working with computer
in 8 hours per day.
During the internship in the company, I also learned some useful things and
there are some things that I still have not yet done well. On the first days of the
internship, I was embarrassing so that I was hard to avoid mistakes. But then,
when being familiar and getting the enthusiasm help, teaches of directors and staff
in the company, I have better integration into the business environment, help me
be more mature , learn life skills and improve better my translation skill. For this
internship, I have been confident that I was fulfill all the goals set.

Lesson learned
After the practice process at Vinh Long Translation Company, I have got some

following experiences which will be valuable for me in the future job:
The first thing is when working in a translation company, I had many
opportunities to meet new boss, new college, many customers and talked to them.
I had many chances to communicate with many people who have many
experiences in job or life. I learnt many things from them, it helps me improve
communication skill, more confident and active in working and in the life.
- We should be friendly to people. This is not just a good work habit, but also
applicable to my life outside of work. I can start this off by greeting everyone with
a smile.
- I have learnt the ingenuity and calm behavior. When having incidents occur

about machinery, or difficulties at work, we should be calm, avoid to make
customers be anxiety and depression, create belief and give them comfort
psychology.

What is the most important thing, I have learnt the active and professional way
of working, it is different from University.
- I have learnt the way to think positively, deal with the problem, do not avoid
them. Volunteer for assignmentsconsider these difficulties as a challenge. I am
going to have to face the same problem eventually.
- The internship has helped me improve the way to set up a goal or a mission
and apply a strong work. On the basis, I can arrange daily work assigned, I am
able to know the ways to arrange my time to complete my works timely and
effectively so that I might implement the targets set successfully.
- With any career, you can not be lack of perseverance and hard virtue. And the
translation is not an easy job. You need to learn patience and always searching to
improve the learning profession, regularly note new words and use them in a
certain order.
- I have been realized that the agility, dynamy, confidence are not only
necessary for a translator but also very important for everyone, every profession in
life. These qualities will be a plus for you if you want to become a real translator.
For example, if having a difficult word, you have never seen, but it's main
keywords meaning of the whole sentence. Meanwhile, the flexibility, grasp of
issues will help you understand the thought of speakers or writers.
- To translate well, I think language skill is also an important factor and you
also have to use Vietnamese fluently to express clearly and convey exactly the
"soul of Vietnam". To exercise this quality, we should spend more time reading
books because reading is a very good quality to hone our language.
- Being a translator, we must be highly disciplined in career. In the oral and
written translation, we should be necessarily faithful to the original text. We have

to see it is as "professional conscience" of the translator. In translation, we have to
really be careful and put our conscience on the top.
- The work of translating is often under much pressure and the biggest pressure
is that you have to translate exactly, and correctly to author’s idea (even when
they have the vague). So that translations become to be better, more attractive and
most receptive . However, the pressures of the job will help me become more
bravery, more assertive in life.
Those experience make me feel confident with my translating skill as well as
searching, collecting, picking and choosing information skills, social skills to get a
good job for myself in the future.

CONCLUSION
In general, an eight-week internship is not a long period of time but in this time

I have improved and learned more things. Through it we do not only learn more
knowledge but also experience the work and life. I have chances to apply my
knowledge learned at university into practice. Some skills such as : translating,
communication, and so on help me work, solve problems significantly and get
good results. Besides, I have time to learn more new skills likely Problems solving
skill, Learning – Collecting information skill and Self-management skill and
improved other skills such as using computer and team-work that bring me many
chances to complete my work well. In the time of practice I had got some
problems; however, I tried my best to overcome them. In addition, from those
difficulties I have more experiences for my future job as well as for other work in
my life. After the internship, I find out that I love this environment and I may get a
job in this area.
Vinh university’s training program has strengths and weaknesses when applied

to actual work. It help me work better and enables me to work in many different

fields such as economics, translation, travelling and so on. In the future, I and
other students in Foreign Languages Department will become a good translator or
interpreter. With a degree of English university on hand, we can also work in the
international

relations

and

foreign

affairs

in

the

business, the media

agencies, social, international and commercial organizations in Vietnam, or in the
functional departments of organizations, foreign companies or joint venture with
foreign parties, even in organizations and agencies using English for the
transaction or business, etc.
At Vinh University, students are provided a basic knowledge to apply on the
fact job. However, the knowledge is not realistic. Professional students learn too
much theories but have few experience of practical work, therefore, they will feel
embarrassed in work and have many difficulties to pursue career in the future.

In the final, I would like to give many thanks again to Vinh University and
Vinh Long translation company that gave me a chance to train myself and orient
me to my future profession.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The role of the programme of university is undeniable. However, the ability of

graduate students do not meet the requirements of society. Lessons focus on too
much on theory. The teaching programme does not include the urgent demand of
the society and update of knowledge for working, that causes confusion and
students do not meet market needs when leaving school. Through what I
experienced in two months at the practice facility,

I want to give some

suggestions for Foreign Languages Department of Vinh University as follow:
Firstly, I think there are something that should be changed in our schedule. We
should reduce teaching theory and increase by practicing .We should increase time
for translation, interpretation, speaking and listening. Students have the opportunity
to practice and learn many more from teachers as well as through classroom
lessons. It will help students improve and enhance the communicating ability and

make them feel not confused when they talk to others and present something in
front of the crowd. Students will feel more confident about their translation and
English communication ability
Secondly, beside tasks and exercises during classtime, teachers should give
students more homework and specific sources to search information and practise
more. Therefore, students will find out and learn actual, social and economic

knowledge and information to study better and enhance profession of jobs in the
future.
Finally, the Department should equip students skills to analyze, synthesize and
evaluate issues, and train students communication skills and interview skills in any
situation. The Department can organize more competitions and fields trips to give
students chances to speak English more and to know how to handle the situations
in English.
I also have some also suggestions for a few basic things to be more effective
when they take their internship program.
Firstly, you should select the appropriate place where English is used for their
business, choose the jobs you like and be suitable to practice so that you have a
chance to show your capabilities. In the practice time, you should find some
information of company, assigned jobs and collect related knowledge to design
your plans and complete them in the best way.
Besides, to avoid wasting time, you should proactively suggest the instructor
assign jobs to be study a lot. Besides, you can volunteer to do other works to learn
experience. You should observe how to do from your staff, give questions in
trouble at work that will help you make better processes of works and regulations
of the company.

Moreover, the junior students should know and prepare the best
communicating, working skills. You should be able to quickly acquire, analyze,
and solve the tasks, have the ability to adapt to the working environment of
enterprises. You should also create a good relationship with your staff in company
and partnerships to learn more effective working and solving promblems
experience.
Finally, you must have a high sense of discipline, abide strictly by the rules and
regulations to implement the provisions of the company, basing on the knowledge
learned in school, apply in the reality at practice facility; participate in the

activities of the company, learn from overview to detail of activities at the facility,
and on the basis of theoretical learning, apply to resolve the issues raised while
working.
