calculating the expenditure of the tours, receiving and sending the emails, I received

address, tours, time and price. The company would like to broaden the international
market, so I and accountant, marketing translated the tour into English to upload

CHAPTER II: PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES
2.1. What I have done
After two months practicing at Thao Dan Limited Company in Vinh City,
from February, 17th to April, 14th. I got many valuable experiences to complete the
report and use it in future.
I had chance to work as a tour guide to provide information about cultural
and historical of sites to visitors. I joined some tours such as Vinh – Quang Binh –

Quang Tri – Vinh, Thanh Chuong – Tran Temple – Hung Temple – Thanh Chuong
(see appendix).
First of all, when picking tourists up to begin a trip, I greeted them with a
friendly and open attitude. First of all, I introduced a little background of the
company, myself and the tour (about subject, content), then I gave them itinerary of
the trip and set meeting points during tour. Along the road, I also gave some
information about places which the tour passes and with the prepared pullzes for
exiceting activities on the car, I gave tourists some games that made them forget
tired feeling. During visiting time, I managed tourists carefully, head counted
regularly to make sure I have all of them. I dealt with some problems quite
carefully. When tourists got lost, I tried to phoned him and asked the driver to wait
him some minutes, informed to everyone that he would come back soon and don’t
worrry about that.
When we broke up tourists and ended tours, I was very happy to answer
visitors’ questions, from the first question to the last one and gave them thanks,
wished them well and hoped to see them again.
In addition, I also shared works with marketing and accountant as called to
book rooms, calculated expenditure of tours, sent the insurance request to the AAA
insurance company, went to sign the tours and car for rent contracts. When the
company got information of tourists include name, age, address, tour, number of
them, gender, time, I calculated expenditure these tours, made insurance contract.
After that, went to sign contract with offices that booked tours, sign with car travel
company to rent car. And before tours coming to chosen place, I called to hotel there
to book rooms for tourists. Sometimes, I helped the accountant receive and send
faxes and emails to offices that booked tours, to the hotels to book rooms and meals.
Specially, I did with the accountant translate tour to help company broaden
international market. That is tour to Western – Mekong River for this summer with
the time 6 days 5 nights (see appendix). The company hopes to widen market to
international, so we took responsibility to translate some tours into English and
upload company’s website. I tried to apply learnt knowledge in this duty. Although

my knowledge is limited, I always tried my best to translate better and more clearly.
I did this duty with the accountant, we helped each other to find out good words,

phrases, structures that are suitable for each region. If there were words which we
couldn’t understand, we looked it up in the dictionary to get exactly meaning.
2.2. New skills acquired and skills improved.
Through 8 weeks of training process at Thao Dan Limited Company, I got a
lot valuable working experiences and soft skills. In my opinion, these precious
experiences will help me a lot for my work in the future. The following is some of
experiences which I gained during this training course.
Firstly, I also improved my translating skill when I help the accountant
translate some tours into English. I enhanced the mehtods to clearly translate and
using words skill in translation.
Secondly, I could improve communication skill. I knew that communication
skill is indispensable elements for all fields. Actually, it is very important for tour
guides. This expresses how to be the smooth transaction and travel guides. I worked
as a tour guide so communication skill was essential for me in contacting with the
visitors.

Besides, with the guidance of Ms. Chung and everybody in the company I
learned how to photocopy and print documents, receive and send faxes. I also had
chance to practice doing something in the office such as delivering fliers, sticking
and cutting paper, design and estimate tours. Although those look simple, they also
gave us difficulties when facing to the real life. For example, I know how to deliver
advertisements effectively. Especially, I also learned so many important skills in
dealing with customers and working with staffs. Moreover, in spite of short time of
training process, the internship course at the company makes me feel more
confident and patient than before.
As a tour guide, I’ve learnt some basics guiding skills. First of all, I found
how to make a good introduction and conclusion. Introduction sets the stage and
mood for the whole tour. It is the first and most lasting impression the tourists will
have of a tour guide. And conclusion is the final one on the tourists and will affect
their entire memory of the tour and a tour guide. It offers a chance to answer any
questions of visitors. Secondly, it is how to manage group. The safety of tourists is
my responsibility; therefore I tried to lead visitors well and made them feel safe and
comfortable. Thirdly, how to deal with problems during the tour is so important for
a tour guide. Those problems may be the causes from tour guides and somethimes
from the tourists. I could deal with many problems so that most tourists didn’t even
know there was a problem. Finally, I realized that my voice is also equally
important. During the tour, I controlled my voice, chose suitable positions so that
everybody can hear and understand what I am saying.
In addition, I realized that if I want to become a professional tour guide, I
need to have:

- Knowledge of the history, culture, customs and traditions of the regions,
and understand clearly about tourist sites, scenic, historic.
- Communication skills and behavior are flexible, cultured. In this skill, tour
guides have to be knowledgeable about human psychology, culture and customs of
each area, each country in order to take different and suitable attitudes for visitors.
For a moment I can not understand every one of hundreds of people. Therefore, I
have to be really flexible in communication and behavior.
- Organizational and manage tour skill, from guiding to talking, then
arranging accommodation. It is sastified tourists’ demand.
- Fluency in a foreign language, especially if said as many languages as
possible. Travel companies always give priority to tour guides who are good at
foreign languages.
- A tour guide also should be patient, hard work and sociable with people.
The trip is successful or not, tourists feel comfortable and get the good
image of where they came or not, the role of tour guides is very important.
2.3. Management techniques observed
Over my internship, I have learnt some valuable management skills from the
management director of the company – human management skill. He always has
strict attitude to manage employees but besides the stringency, he’s also a friendly
man who usually conducts staffs enthusiastically and carefully, especially for new
employees and internship students. In company, each employee has a different work
and work schedule, most of the time they spent to work, although they are rarely

encountered in the company. The manager director manages employees through
their own work schedule. He appears immediately when employees meet any
difficulty. Through the management employees in the company, I realized that the
use value of each worker also depends on the good management.
In addition, I also learnt about financial management skill from both the
manager and the accountant. They calculate everything very carefully and exactlly,
there is no error. In fact, I learnt many experiences in management techniques. They
will be useful experiences for me in my future job.
Furthermore, I found out that equipment manegement skill is very important
for tour guides. During the tours, the tour guide had to ask tourists to protect the
equiment in the car and destinations. And tour guides also helped me understand the
group manegement skill. Tour guides must choose good ways to control group to
avoid problems and suitable positions to talk to the tourists and to make sure that
everyone can see, hear and understand the tour guide. The tour guides always head
counted tourists to get the number of them. On the car, I observed the way that the
tour guides ignole tired and uncomfortable feeling. It is suggested some interesting
games for tourists to play.

2.4. Classroom skills employed
Through two months of internship time, I got many experiences under
guidance of experienced employees in the company, especially tour guides. I
applied in reality what I have learnt from lectures at Vinh University.
Firstly, I spoke to staffs in the company in English to practice and improve
English skills.
Secondly, I studied English for Tourism so I applied the knowledge about
this subject to work. I learnt how to introduce tourists about destination to create
excitement for tourists. I also chose formal and suitable language that are reasonable
for every place to say.
Thirdly, I also learnt Vietnamese Cultural Basis, therefore I understood more
about cultural characteristics of Vietnam, which is quite easy for me to find about
destinations.
In addition, interpretation and translation knowledge help me share with the
accountant to translate tour to help company broaden international market. That is
tour to Western – Mekong River for this summer with the time 6 days 5 nights.
Otherwise, I learnt English for Hotel at college course so I understood how
to book rooms that is convenient and careful for two sides (company and hotel).
Furthermore, I had got speaking semesters, I practiced my public speaking
skill so I am more self-confident and have strong voice, good preparation, clear
purpose, body language to work as tour guide. It is the visitors not only need to hear
the tour guide but they also understand what he/she is saying. Especially, when
standing in a pagoda, I try to say not loudly but everyone can hear me.
2.5. Problem encountered
During my internship period, I worked at Thao Dan Limited Company. There
are some difficulties for me.
First of all, I am an internship student so I lack knowledge about works in the
company. Although everyone in company guided me clearly and thoroughly, I was
still embarrassed at the first time.

Secondly, I met some difficulties while I shared with the accountant translate
the tour to help company broaden international market because I lack new words
about tourism so I had to look it up in the dictionary. And my translating skill is not
great so I had to face with some difficulties during this process.
Thirdly, I had ever had more opportunities to go to many places in our
country so I had to find more about places when having tours and to ask the
experienced tour guides in this company to have the accuracy information.

Supervisor: Vu Thi Viet Huong (M.A)

Foreign Languages Department

Besides, the company that I practiced internship course is limited to
international tours, so I didn’t have more chance to talk to foreigners and to
practice my English skills.
Moreover, I took two tours only during my internship time, so I couldn’t get
much tour guide exeperiences as I espected.
Furthermore, the time of internship is not long so when I understood all
works, I finished my practicing process.
In summary, I had some difficulties in internship time and I hope to study
harder to improve myself.

2.6. Lesson learned
After 8 weeks practicing work in Thao Dan Limited Company, I learned a lot
of interesting and useful things.
Firstly, the translators need to evaluate the original documents then arrange
to translate. Before translating, the translators should move their eyes to get the
content of documents. After that go into the details of the structure in each sentence,
each word. A professinal translator needs to have an objective attitude to convey
the original contents. Subjective assements can not value the problems which are
being translated. It is very important. The translations must be exactly to the initial
documents, whether they are interesting or not.
Translators are not only good at foreign languages but also must be skillful
in using the mother tongue to translate. Avoiding translating word by word, the
sentences should be shorten to get the final smoothly result. How to apply
accumulated experiences is also one of necessary requirements for better
translations.
Secondly, tour guides told me how to select suitable languages to introduce
and explain to tourists about the cultural heritage and nature of destinations they
visit. Therefore, I knew important experiences for this job. I also was shared that a
tour guide has to go far away from home not only short time but also long time.
It is important for a tour guide to be friendly, polite and enthusiastic.
Otherwise, foreign languages ability is very important to get a professional tour
guide. In addition, patience, hard working, solving capability are also necessary
factors for tour guides.
As a tour guide, I got experiences to give the introduction and conclusion of
the tours. The first and most lasting impression the tourists will have of tour guides
is the introduction. How to greet the visitors and begin the tours are necessary for
tour guides. And during the tours, visitors had good image to the tour guides, so at
the end of the trip, the tour guide should be able to finish commentary smoothly,
Supervisor: Vu Thi Viet Huong (M.A)

shouldn’t make tourists feel that the tour guide had nothing left to say or that the
trip rushed.
In addition, I realized that during the trip, the tour guides should control the
voice so that tourists can hear them even if they are in a pagoda. The necessary is
not only tourists can hear tour guides but also they must understand what tour
guides are saying.
Moreover, I’ve learnt how to deal with some problems during the tours. No
tour can be ever perfect so it is difficult to avoid some problems that can take place.
A good tour guide should be able to see a problem coming before it actually
happens, try to avoid some smaller problems or deal with them so that tourists don’t
know there was a problem. If there is a big problem, a good tour guide always
inform there visitors of what is happening. For example, when tourists are sick or
lost, a tour guide shouldn’t shout to everyone, because this make them worry and be
tricken, should calm down and solve carefully so that tourists believe that
everything will be better. Or when visitors lost their luggage, a tour guide should
help them find out it in best ways. Don’t give them uncomfortable feeling and
unbelieved each other attitude.
Besides, I understood how to design and estimate tours. Now, I can design
some domestic tours without dificulties.

Beside knowledge and skills as mentioned above, health plays an important
role. A tour guide has to meet different weather in many places. If there is no good
health, the work can not be convenient.
Finally, I had many experiences about the tourist sites, culture and custom of
each area.

Tourism will bring economic benefits, it also make a contribution on shortening the

internship at Thao Dan Limited Company has brought me the real knowledge which
is extremely important to me.
One more time, I would like to say thanks to my supervisor - Mrs Vu Thi

CHAPTER IV: RECOMMENDATIONS
It is an honor for me to be a student of Foreign Languages Department –
Vinh University.
Teachers in the department are young, friendly, active experienced, ones and
have perfect teaching methods. I have learned so many useful things from my
teachers. However, these methods should go into social reality to suitable for the
developing of society. Teachers usually ask students to do assignments to improve
their skill as group learning. And more extroverted activities should be made for
students to have opportunity to express their ability.
In fact, it should be strict with activities for students to practice in order to
promote all capabilities of them and ensure the equality.
Moreover, department of foreign language should widen more
knowledge in teaching translation and interpretation by the way having more
chances for students to practice with the foreigners living in Vinh city. It will help
students have good communication environment, improve their pronunciation and

be more confident with their abilities. The department also should focus on subjects
that will beside to students in the future more instead of other subjects which are
only basic ones and less important than.
Further more, before taking internship time, students should have more
practical opportunities to get experiences.
