PART II: PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES
What I have done

After gaining knowledge about translation from my teachers in Vinh University
I have chance to practice as translator at Neoling International English Company from
February 17 to April 12.
In the first week, I had opportunity to meet the director and staffs in the
company and receive some documents about establishment and development history of
the company as well as to familiarize my self with working environment there.
In the second week, I tidied up the rooms every day. Besides, I observed the
works at reception room to get to know with the work, read the documents to
understand more about the company, send and receive email, fax. I arranged and
classified the documents for staffs in the company.
In the third week, I also tidied up the rooms every day. I had tasks such as:
Making tea and coffee, getting assignment from the instructor for the week, observing
the way to work of the receptionists and other personal of the company, helping to
type, print and photocopy the documents. Especially, I had chance to attend the
international women’s day with director and staffs in the company.
In the fourth week, I did the old works and attended the weekly meeting of the
company. This week, I had chance to sit in the receptionist office to work as a staff
under instruction of the manager and translate contracts (economic contract,
supplimentary services contract…) from Vietnamese to English and from English to
Vietnamese.
In the fifth, sixth and seventh week, I did the same works before.
2.

In the eighth week, I wrote internship report.
New skills acquired and skills improved

Through 8 weeks of training process at Neoling International English
Company, I got a lot valuable working experience and soft skills. With these precious
experiences that will help me a lot for my work in future. The following is
some of experiences which I gained during this training course.

6

The first, the internship course brought to me the opportunity to use my English
knowledge through communicating with foreigners coming with the company and
translating many docments. I recognized that my English is improved through practice.
I learned a lot of vocabulary, information and knowledge in
contracts as well as know how to use translation methods.
The second, with the guides of everybody in the company I learned how to
photocopy, receive and send faxes. I also had chance to work in the receptionist office
as a staff in the office, it makes me feel more confident and patient than before.
Especially I also learned many important skills in dealing with customers and working
with staffs. Moreover, as a receptionist at the company, I also learned some good
characteristics like attentiveness, initiativeness, loyalty, maturity, respect for
confidentiality and discretion, attitude and independence.
Thirdly, I know more about translation job and how we do to become a good
translator. Because translation is not an easy job as we think. It needs many skills. After
working there I sum up some precious experiences as a translator in my internship
report.
Lastly, I want to mention that translator requires patient, active, and has good
memory because when working we need a lot of skills to fulfill work, moreover
passion for the profession, reading and learning vocabulary are traits that make you
close with translator career longer. I had many chances to contact with knowledge
about translation we can see that practicing at company is good for every student.
3.

Management techniques observed

In the practicum period I learnt about the management skills from my supervisor.
There are four basic management skills anyone must master to have any success in a
job. These four basic skills are planning, organizing, directing and controlling. When I
organized the work, I need to:
 Determine the roles needed, assign tasks to the roles.
 Determine the best resource (people or equipment) for the role.
 Make sure the goal is clear to everyone.
In addition, I also gained the time management and planning skills. Having time
management skills is simply having the ability to recognize and solve time
management problems. It is as the old adage says, to never put off for later what can be
done right now. I can develop this personal management skill by keeping a calendar
and beginning to schedule everything.

7

Financial management skills are what I learnt from the cashier. I could perfect
my financial management skills by trying a few of the followings: creating a budget
and tailor my spending to meet its requirements and saving every receipt from every
purchase that I make in one month and find out how much money I am really spending.
4.

Classroom skill employed :

While studying at university, I have been trained about many subjects such as:
Interpretation, Tourism, Translation, Law, Economics, etc by my teachers of Foreign
Language Department at Vinh University. These subjects have helped me a lot for my

internship process.
With the Interpretation subject, I have been learnt about listening skill and good
response. Apart from it, I also know how to take some notes, memorize and public
presentation skill.
With the Tourism subject, I have been equipped about public speaking and narrative
skill, problem solving skill, and organizational and leadership skills.
With the Law and Economics subject, I have given the background knowledge
about law and economics issues in my country and all over the world, it helped me
very much in working in some jobs.
With the Translation subject, I have been learnt many new words in different topics
and the way to translate Vietnamese into English and versa.
To be equipped with these skills, I have a chance to practice in Neoling
International English Company. During my internship process, I used successful my
knowledge to provide for my task.
5.

Problems encountered

When practicing at the Neoling International English Company although I tried
my best, I encountered some problems.
The first is communicating with colleagues in the company. This was the first
time, I had communicated with people in the office. I do not think that was so difficult.
Behaving with the manager is different from behaving with colleagues. From the way
of talking, the way of standing, uniform in office, I must consider all. To make the
work more successful, communicating well plays an important role.

8

The second is translation idioms, dialect and slang. Vietnamese and English are

different in idioms and slangs. And in fact, I don’t know much about it. So I felt very
tired when I met them in the exercise which the director gave me. To understand these I
had to use my book and the internet, even I had to ask for the answer from the
professional translator in this company.
Finally, due to limited vocabulary in many fiels, it is difficult for me to express
contents of the text. To solve this problem I had learned by heart vocabulary every day
and read a lot of magazines, newspapers, books….
6.

Lesson learned
After the practice process at Neoling International English Company, I have got
some following experiences which will be valuable for me in the future job:
Firstly, I worked in an active and professional environment so I learnt working
style there, it is different from university. I learnt to send and receive fax as well as
working under pressure which helps me to work in the future. Moreover, I had chance
to work with many people who have many experiences in job or life. I learnt many
things from them, they help me more confident and active to communicate and work
with anyone.
Secondly, I know more about interpreting job and how we do to become a good
interpreter. As you know, interpreting is not an easy job as we think. It needs many
skills. After working there I summarize some precious experiences as an interpreter and
receptionist in my practice report.
Lastly, I want to mention that interpreter requires patience, active, and good
memory because when working we need a lot of skills to fulfill work, moreover
passion for the profession, reading and learning vocabulary are traits that make you
close with interpreter career longer…

PART III: RECOMMENDATIONS
From the problems I encountered during my internship process at Neoling
International English Company, I want to give some suggestions to Foreign Language
Department of Vinh University as following:
Firstly, creating more opportunities for students to practice with English by
working with foreigners at school, opening some programs for students to learn in
countries where using English as the first language such as Singapore, etc. With
Tourism subject, we should organize tours which including only students to practice
and give marks for them instead of mid-term test. With Economics and Law subject,
we should help students to practice more and more.
Secondly, the Department should provide some specialized subjects in
curriculum so that students can choose with their favorite such as: banking, accounting,
and commercial finance and others. Creating conditions for student to practice
extracurricular and linking with companies for students to cooperate and work part
time at the companies or to organize programs to find young talent in the future.
On the other hand, the Department should focus on practical knowledge in
training programs. Currently, our programs focus on theory too much. Students do
not have much chance to practice with skills as speaking, listening, translating, or
interpreting. Students are not taught soft skills which are the occupational requirements
of a job and many other activities, such as: the cluster of personality traits, social
graces, communication, language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism. Lacking
of these makes students face many difficulties and awkward situations in jobs,
especially in practicum period.
The university should invite foreign teachers to teach students, create conditions
for students to have good learning environment, to be communicated with native
speakers more. The university also should hold more English clubs with specific topics
regularly to help students to have opportunities to learn and exchange experiences to
each other. Foreign language students have to master the grammar and have rich
vocabulary, ability of reading and understanding, listening and speaking fluently. Thus
the Foreign Languages Department needs to have suitable training program to create

10

learning interest for students, and create conditions for students to have opportunities
to practice more.
Especially, to students of Foreign Language Department, when foreign
delegations visit the university, teachers should let students receive and make a chance
for them to visit and introduce about their university and the city. These activities will
help students having opportunities to cultivate their English. The university needs to
apply new teaching methods to help students overcome the habit of passive learning,
train independent work skill and teamwork skill for students. These skills are very
important to students when working in companies.
Finally, teachers can ask students to do individual exercises or research paper
which not only base on lectures in school or textbooks, but also require actual, social
and economic knowledge and information. It will help students to form ability of
independent working. On the contrary, to help students have teamwork skill, teachers
should ask students do exercises that require abilities of coordination with others and
working in group. Besides, the university should train presentation skills and
communication skills for students. These are very important skills, contributing to the
success in working of students.
Those are my recommendations to the Department after my practicum period. I
hope they will contribute to the development in training programs of the Department.

PART IV: CONCLUSION
The internship course is not a long period. However, it is useful time for me to
practice myself and learn new things. The working environment was not as simple as

what I have imagined, which caused me worried at the first time.
Then, the more I worked at the company, the more I found interested in it. Working in a
professional environment and with friendly, knowledgeable colleagues, I was
supported experiences so that I could improve my team-working manner,
communication skill and time management. After the internship, I find out that I love
this environment and I may get a job in this area. To get this target, I am going to return
Vinh University and get more knowledge, preparing for my future job. I would like to
give many thanks again to Vinh University and Neoling International English
Company that gave me a chance to train myself and orient me to my future profession.
