Unit 13: HOBBIES
Lesson 1: Reading
I.
Objectives:
1. Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
- use vocabulary items related to the hobbies.
- guess the meanings of words based on contexts
- scan for specific information about the Asian Games
2. Language focus:
-Language: Vocabulary concerning the hobbies such as keep fish, fish tank,
accomplish, collect stamps guitarist, accompany, modest, avid, discarded,
indulge in, keep one’s occupied,…
-Grammar: revise the present simple.
3. Skills:
- Guessing meaning in context
- Scan for specific information to do tasks

Teaching aids: Textbook, picture

Anticipated problem:
-Problem: SS may have little knowledge about hobbies
-Solution: Pre- teaching a few new words

Procedure
Content
I. Warm-up (5’)
List all the things people often do in their
free time.
Hobbies



Collecting stamps, reading books, listening
to music, going shopping, ….
II. Pre- reading
Activity 1: Discussion
1. What are the names of the hobbies
described in the pictures?
2. What do you like to do in your free
time? Why?
Activity 2: Vocabulary
keep fish (V): nuôi cá
guitarist (N): a person who plays a guitar
accomplished (adj)= talented (adj)
accompany (V): đệm đàn

Teacher’s activities
- divide class into 4 groups
- ask Ss to work in groups to
list all the things people do in
the free time in 3 minutes
- Ask them to write down their
answers on the board.
- Sum up and lead in

- Ask Ss to work in pairs and
give the names of some
hobbies.
- Have Ss give answers.
- Provide some new words
- Read each word 2 times and

ask Ss to repeat it.
- Listen and help Ss to read
correctly

- Ask SS to read the
requirement.
- Instruct Ss some strategies to
do task 1:
+ read through the sentences
provided in the task to identify
the part of speech of the word
to fill in the blank.
+ read the words in the box
and identify the part of speech,
+ go back to the passage to
locate and read around these

words to choose the suitable
words to fill the blanks.

- Read the requirement

- Ask Ss to work individually
to do the task.
- Go around and help when
necessary.
- Ask Ss to exchange their
answers with a friend.
- Call on some Ss to read their
answers in front of class.
- Give feedback and correct
answers.

- Do the task

1. The writer’s first hobby is playing the
guitar (line 1, paragraph 2)

IV. After reading
Role- play: Ask your friend about his/her
hobbies. Ask him/her the following
questions:
1. What is your favorite hobby?

3. Where do you usually _____?
4. When do you usually________?
5. Who do you usually_________ with?
6. Why do you enjoy ______?

+ underline the key words to
decide what information they
need to find in the text.
+ read around these words to
find the answers.
- Divide class into 2 groups
and play a game Lucky number
- Ask them to work in groups
to answer the questions.
- Write some numbers on the
board. 1, 7, 12 are lucky
numbers.
- Ask SS to choose one
number:
+ They choose one number and
answer Q correlative with that
number. If they give the right
answer, they have 2 points.
+ If they choose a lucky
number, they’ll have 2 points
without answering Q. They
choose other number and the
game continues.
- Which group has more points

will be the winner.
- Ask SS to give their answers
and locate them(which lines,
which paragraph)

- Listen to T

- Get Ss to work in pair to do
the role-play.
- Go around observing and
helping when necessary.
– T calls on some pairs to
present their work.
